2018 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships: Day 1 Results

Winston-Salem, NC (February 11) – The Virginia State University men and the Winston-Salem State University women are the first-day leaders in the CIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track on Sunday.

Virginia State holds a 73-26 lead over 20-time defending champion Saint Augustine’s University in the men’s division. Virginia Union University is third with 16 points and Lincoln (Pa.) University is fourth with nine points. Bowie State University has eight points while Johnson C. Smith University and Livingstone College have six points each.

Winston-Salem State is ahead 38-32 over Saint Augustine’s in the women’s division. Virginia State is third with 17 points and Livingstone is fourth with 11 points followed by Bowie State (9 pts.) and Virginia Union (4 pts.).

During the meet, four student-athletes were honored for their regular season achievements. Kayla Foy of Winston-Salem State and Magaly Tshipopo of Saint Augustine’s were named CIAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Year and CIAA Field Athlete of the Year, respectively. Devin Simon of Virginia Union was chosen CIAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Year and Jumonne Exeter of Saint Augustine’s was named CIAA Men’s Field Athlete of the Year.

Five individuals and two relay teams earned gold medals for placing first Sunday. The individual winners were Shaquille Dill of Saint Augustine’s (Men’s One Mile Run), Zakyrah Haynie of Winston-Salem State (Women’s One Mile Run), Dajawn Williams of Virginia State (Men’s Pole Vault), Tshipopo of Saint Augustine’s (Women’s Long Jump) and Allen Blair of Virginia State (Men’s Long Jump). The 4000m Distance Medley Relay races were won by Virginia State (Men) and Saint Augustine’s (Women).

The championship meet will continue Monday morning with the men’s Pentathlon beginning at 9 a.m. The field events begin at 11:45 a.m. with the men’s triple jump and the running events will start at 12:35 p.m. with the men’s 400-meter dash.

Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone.
