South Fulton Shines: Malik Yoba, Terrell Carter, and More to Headline Inaugural Global South Film Festival

The City of South Fulton is making cinematic history with the launch of its first-ever Global South Film Festival, a four-day celebration of storytelling, creativity, and community impact. Taking place from Monday, November 18th, through Thursday, November 21st at the South Fulton Southwest Arts Center, this groundbreaking event is set to spotlight diverse narratives and talented creators from around the globe.

Star-Studded Opening and Closing Nights

The festival kicks off with a powerful opening night hosted by Terrell Carter, star of Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black on Netflix. As a special guest moderator, Carter will lead discussions that set the tone for a week filled with meaningful dialogue and artistic excellence.

Closing night promises to be equally compelling, featuring a special screening of the critically acclaimed docuseries Flipping the Hood: From the Ground Up, created by Malik Yoba, a three-time NAACP Image Award winner. Yoba will take the stage for a live discussion about his work, which highlights grassroots efforts to transform urban communities.

Midweek Highlights

Wednesday’s schedule features another standout moment with Khari “Needlz” Cain, a multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning producer whose credits include hits for Cardi B, Bruno Mars, and Drake. Cain will present a special screening that explores the intersection of music and visual storytelling, offering a glimpse into the creative process of one of the industry’s most celebrated producers.

Another emotional highlight is What About the Deacon, a special screening dedicated to Deacon Johnny Hollman, who tragically lost his life at the hands of Atlanta police last year. Members of Hollman’s family will attend, ensuring this heartfelt tribute becomes a rallying cry for justice and change.

A Festival of Glamour and Impact

Each evening will feature a blue carpet experience, welcoming media, filmmakers, and talent to celebrate the artistry and passion driving the Global South Film Festival. It’s an opportunity to witness South Fulton stepping boldly onto the cultural stage, showcasing stories that resonate with both local and international audiences.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
