Jackson State Makes History: Triumph in the 2024 Celebration Bowl

Under the bright lights of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the Jackson State Tigers achieved a momentous milestone in their storied football history. Powered by a dynamic offense and a stifling defense, the Tigers defeated South Carolina State 28-7 in the Celebration Bowl, claiming their first-ever victory in this postseason showdown, which also serves as the HBCU national championship.

The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champions (12-2) came into the matchup with a purpose, riding a 10-game winning streak and eager to redeem themselves from a bitter 31-10 loss to the Bulldogs in the 2021 Celebration Bowl. This year, they not only avenged that defeat but also established their dominance in front of a roaring crowd of 36,823.

Morgan-Fortilien Connection Shines

The Tigers’ offense was led by quarterback Jacobian Morgan, who delivered an electrifying performance with 233 passing yards and two touchdown passes. His favorite target of the day, wide receiver Joanes Fortilien, emerged as a star, hauling in both scoring throws. The pair connected on crucial plays, including a game-sealing 14-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

“I knew we had something special,” Morgan said post-game. “Joanes and I worked on those routes all season, and today, it clicked when it mattered most.”

Ground Game and Defense Dominate

In addition to Morgan’s aerial prowess, the Tigers’ ground game was formidable. Running back Irv Mulligan bulldozed his way to two short touchdown runs, keeping the Bulldogs’ defense on its heels throughout the game.

Defensively, Jackson State was unyielding, limiting South Carolina State to just 211 total yards and an astonishing 59 yards through three quarters. The Tigers’ defense, a hallmark of their 2024 campaign, set the tone early and never relented, forcing critical stops and maintaining pressure on the Bulldogs’ offense.

“Our defense has been the backbone of this team all year,” said head coach T.C. Taylor. “They stepped up again today, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

A Game of Redemption

The game began with drama as a potential Jackson State punt return touchdown was nullified by an unnecessary roughness penalty, leading to a scoreless first quarter. But the Tigers quickly regrouped, scoring 14 points in the second quarter to take control of the game.

South Carolina State’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to shift the momentum. Jackson State answered emphatically, adding 14 more points in the fourth quarter to secure the decisive victory.

Historic Win for the Tigers

This triumph marked the Tigers’ first Celebration Bowl victory in program history, capping off a remarkable 12-2 season. It also served as a testament to their resilience and growth as a team, especially given their recent struggles in this championship game.

For the players, coaches, and fans, this win symbolized much more than a trophy—it was a moment of pride for Jackson State and a celebration of HBCU football excellence.

“We’ve been working for this moment all season,” said wide receiver Joanes Fortilien. “To finally hold that trophy and hear the cheers from our fans—there’s nothing like it.”

As the confetti fell and the team hoisted the Celebration Bowl trophy, the Tigers cemented their legacy in HBCU football history, proving that hard work, determination, and unity can turn dreams into reality.
