The 28th Annual JD Entertainment Old School and Blues Festival: A Legacy That Lives On

By Dr. Jerome Dorn

Huntsville, Alabama is preparing for a musical celebration that’s bigger than ever — and this year, it carries an even deeper meaning. The 28th Annual JD Entertainment Old School and Blues Festival returns on Saturday, May 24th at 502 Quarter Mountain Road, bringing together an unforgettable lineup of R&B, funk, hip hop, and Southern soul legends.

This year’s festival isn’t just about the music — it’s about honoring the life and legacy of its visionary founder, Joe “Ivory” Douglas, who has since transitioned. Now, his son Joe Douglas Jr. proudly carries the torch, ensuring his father’s mission to keep old-school music alive remains stronger than ever.

A Lineup of Icons and Rising Stars

The 2025 lineup is a powerful tribute to the festival’s enduring legacy, featuring a dynamic blend of musical trailblazers and soulful favorites. Headlining the event are the legendary Isley Brothers, whose timeless hits like “For the Love of You” and “Fight the Power” continue to resonate across generations. Their performance promises to be a highlight, blending nostalgia with the smooth, enduring sound that made them icons.

Joining them is hip hop pioneer Big Daddy Kane, whose effortless delivery and classic tracks like “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’” defined an era. Southern soul heavyweight Pokey Bear brings his signature bluesy sound and charismatic style to the stage, while LeVelle delivers a soulful, R&B groove that’s sure to captivate the crowd.

Festival-goers will also be treated to a nostalgic dance party with Midnight Star, the funk legends behind “Freak-A-Zoid” and “Midas Touch.” Adding to the excitement is LaTocha, formerly of the multi-platinum group Xscape, showcasing her powerful voice and solo journey.

Rounding out the lineup are soulful rising stars like Frank Johnson and Moses Stovall, ensuring the festival stays connected to both its roots and the future of the genre.

Carrying the Legacy Forward

For 28 years, the JD Entertainment Old School and Blues Festival has been more than an event — it’s been a labor of love, a gathering of family, and a celebration of the music that defined generations. This year holds a deeper significance as Joe Douglas Jr. steps up to continue the legacy his father built.

“My dad believed in bringing people together through music — and that’s exactly what we’re going to keep doing,” Douglas Jr. shared. “This festival is his heart and soul, and we’re going to make sure it continues to grow and thrive, just like he dreamed.”

The motto “The Show Must Go On” — a phrase Joe “Ivory” Douglas lived by — now carries new weight. It’s not just a reminder to persevere; it’s a promise from his family to keep his vision alive for future generations.

A Southern Soul Experience Like No Other

Set against the scenic backdrop of 502 Quarter Mountain Road, the festival transforms Huntsville into a soulful sanctuary. Attendees will enjoy a full day of music, food, and community — with local vendors offering classic Southern bites and refreshing drinks to keep the energy high.

VIP seating is available for those looking to enjoy the show in style, offering prime views, shaded comfort, and an elevated festival experience.

For many, this festival is more than an annual event — it’s a homecoming. It’s a chance for friends, families, and fans to reunite, relive cherished memories, and create new ones — all while grooving to the soundtrack of their lives.

The 28th Annual JD Entertainment Old School and Blues Festival isn’t just a concert — it’s a tribute to a man who built a musical legacy that touched countless lives. Joe Douglas Jr. is ensuring that legacy continues, stronger than ever.
