Remembering Michael Sumler: The Heartbeat of Kool & the Gang

The music world mourns the loss of Michael Sumler, affectionately known as “Chicago Mike,” a cherished member of the legendary R&B and funk ensemble Kool & the Gang. Sumler tragically passed away at the age of 71 in a car accident on Veterans Memorial Highway in Cobb County, Georgia, just outside Atlanta, on the night of May 24, 2025. 

A Dynamic Force on Stage

Joining Kool & the Gang in the early 1980s, Sumler quickly became an integral part of the group’s dynamic stage presence. Known for his infectious energy and ability to engage audiences, he was often described as the “hype man” who could electrify a crowd. His contributions were pivotal during live performances, where his charisma and enthusiasm helped bring the band’s iconic hits like “Celebration,” “Jungle Boogie,” and “Get Down on It” to life.

Mentor and Advocate for Emerging Artists

Beyond his performances, Sumler was deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of musicians. He dedicated significant time to mentoring young artists, offering guidance and support to help them navigate the complexities of the music industry. Adrian Meeks of Song Source Music Group reflected on Sumler’s mentorship, stating, “He always wanted to see other people succeed in the business that he’d been around most of all of his life.” 

A Legacy of Kindness and Joy

Those who knew Sumler remember him not only for his musical talents but also for his warmth and generosity. Greg Williams of Switch Entertainment remarked, “He was the life of the party… kind, thoughtful, intelligent, and articulate.”  Sumler’s positive spirit left an indelible mark on all who crossed his path, both on and off the stage.

Michael Sumler’s passing is a profound loss to the music community. As a vital member of Kool & the Gang, his contributions helped shape the sound and success of a band that has left an indelible mark on the music industry. His dedication to performance and mentorship ensures that his influence will resonate for years to come.

As the world remembers “Chicago Mike,” his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the timeless music he helped create. 

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
