Atlanta, GA – On Saturday, November 11th right before the 6pm game at Clark Atlanta University, the family of NBA Official Tony Brown will present a check to the CAU Basketball Program. Clark Atlanta University is hosting the Inaugural Tony Brown Basketball Classic this weekend at Epps Gymnasium located at 650 Larkin Street SW Atlanta, Ga 30314.

On October 20, 2022, NBA official, Tony Brown passed away peacefully at hospice care in Atlanta, Georgia, surrounded by family, friends, and his NBA official brethren after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. During his incredible journey, he was visited by his alma mater, Clark Atlanta University’s basketball team in the hospital and presented with a game jersey. Before passing, he encouraged family and friends to support an endowment and scholarship fund for CAU’s basketball program.  

He is a 1989 graduate of Clark College, soon after it merged with Atlanta University to become Clark Atlanta University. He graduated with a B.A. in Finance, but it was basketball that attracted him to Clark College. After visiting Atlanta and Clark College, he wanted to join their program.  Unfortunately, Clark College didn’t have any basketball scholarships available so Tony decided to work at Delta Airlines and put himself through college. 

However, his love of basketball never wavered and it led him to become a college basketball official. After working his way through the ranks, Tony was hired as an NBA referee in 2002. In the NBA, Tony worked four All-Star games in 2006, 2017, 2018 and 2021. He reached his first coveted Finals game in 2020. Tony never missed a day of work as a college or professional referee until his illness. 

Tony’s NBA referee career was derailed as he approached his next play-off season where he was sure to work the Finals of 2021. Unfortunately, April 30, 2021, he was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. Being such a strong athlete, Brown had no idea that he was so sick. Within a week of diagnosis, he began chemo and an entirely new journey.

As a husband (Tina Taylor Brown) and father of three, Tony knew the value sports and education has played in his life and his family’s. His wife Tina Taylor Brown also attended Clark College. The Tony Brown Basketball Endowment and Scholarship Fund was created to make sure that no athlete has to choose between their sport and education.  As of November of 2023 over $140,000 has been raised for the Endowment and Scholarship Fund.

Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone.
