Acclaimed singer, trumpeter, and author Johnny Britt has joined the ranks of cultural icons such as Taylor Swift, Hugh Jackman, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Oprah Winfrey by participating in the American Library Association’s (ALA) Celebrity Read campaign. 

This prestigious campaign, launched in 1985, promotes literacy and encourages the joy of reading by featuring influential figures who inspire others to delve into the world of books.

Johnny Britt’s involvement in the ALA Celebrity Read campaign underscores his dedication to education and personal growth. 

Known for his passion for music and literature, Britt has been a vocal advocate for reading in his hometown of Los Angeles and beyond. 

He believes in the transformative power of books to broaden horizons, inspire dreams, and uplift spirits.

“Being a part of the ALA Celebrity Read campaign is an incredible honor,” says Britt. “Reading has always been a source of inspiration and growth for me. In addition to promoting literacy, Britt is also celebrating the success of his memoir, The Soloist, which has resonated deeply with readers since its release. 

The book offers an intimate look at Britt’s extraordinary journey—from his humble beginnings as an inner-city kid in Cleveland, Ohio, to his rise as an international music sensation.

Through vivid storytelling, The Soloist chronicles Britt’s experiences, including his studies at the prestigious Conservatoire de Versailles in France and his rise to stardom influenced by music legends Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis.

Co-authored with Arlene Krieger, The Soloist takes readers through Britt’s groundbreaking career, highlighting his role as the youngest-ever musical director of The Temptations, his work with the Motown/MoJazz Impromp2 group Britt founded, and his achievements as a top contemporary jazz trumpeter and vocalist. 

Britt’s contributions to music and his passion for storytelling continue to captivate audiences worldwide. His literary journey is complemented by his latest musical achievement. 

Johnny Britt’s jazzy rendition of the 1964 classic “Walk On By” has taken the airwaves by storm. 

Originally made famous by Dionne Warwick and covered by the likes of Isaac Hayes, Michael McDonald, and Seal, Britt’s version debuted as the most added single and quickly became a top gainer at radio in its second week. SiriusXM Watercolors has also added “Walk On By” to its nationwide rotation.

“This song felt so good while I was arranging and producing it … I knew this one was a gem,” Britt says. “It’s a dream come true that my 25-year-old son Josh Britt mixed ‘Walk On By.’ I’m so glad the world will hear his talent. Playing drums on the track is my studio drummer Marcus Williams, while I handled keyboards, bass, and muted trumpet. It’s just Marcus and Johnny on this track.”

‘Walk on By’ is the is the third radio single from Britt’s After We Play album that SiriusXM has picked up, marking a significant milestone in his career. It’s such a standout track that it’s even being entered on this year’s Grammy ballot.

The accompanying music video, directed by Cedric Godin and edited by Sam Lenkov, beautifully captures the essence of the song, with Paris serving as a breathtaking backdrop to Britt’s heartfelt performance. Shot in the romantic, picturesque streets of Paris, where Britt studied music years ago, the video brings his journey full circle.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference.
