Howard Hewett: The Iconic Voice Behind R&B’s Greatest Hits on Love, Legacy, and Why Becoming a Part of the Soundtrack of Your Life Means Everything to Him
Howard Hewett’s rich, unforgettable vocals have defined an era of R&B and become part of the memories that people cherish for a lifetime.
From his rise to fame as the lead singer of Shalamar to his enduring solo success with timeless classics like “I’m for Real” and the beloved anthem “Say Amen,” Hewett remains one of music’s most recognizable and cherished voices.
Even now, he continues to receive an outpouring of love from fans around the world — a bond that keeps him creating, performing, and connecting. For Howard, becoming part of the soundtrack of someone’s life is not just a career milestone; it is his true purpose as an artist.
In a recent conversation, the legendary singer opened up about his journey, the timeless connection he shares with his audience, and why we never get enough of the songs that mark life’s most meaningful moments.
Hewett credits his early years with Shalamar for shaping him into the artist he is today. “Being with Shalamar really laid the foundation for everything I have done since,” he says. “It gave me the chance to grow, to find my own voice, and most importantly, to understand how powerful music is when it truly connects people. We were not just making hits — we were telling stories and creating memories that became part of people’s lives. That feeling, becoming part of their memories, has always stayed with me.”
When it comes to his solo hits, Hewett says the personal meaning behind each song is what makes them timeless. “Those songs came straight from my heart,” he shares. “‘I’m for Real’ is about honesty, commitment, and genuine love, things people can feel in their own lives. ‘Say Amen’ is about faith, gratitude, and hope. When people tell me they played those songs at weddings, in church, or during tough or joyful times, it reminds me I am doing what I was meant to do. I am becoming part of the soundtrack of someone’s life, and that is everything to me.”
Hewett says seeing multiple generations at his shows is one of the greatest gifts of his career. “It is the greatest blessing,” he says. “Seeing families come together, parents, kids, even grandkids, all singing the same songs reminds me that real music is timeless. When someone says, ‘I grew up on your music and now I am bringing my children to hear you live,’ I feel like I am part of their family story. There is no better feeling than that.”
For Hewett, the real reward has always been hearing how his music has touched lives. “Music is my gift but it is also my way of giving back,” he explains. “When someone tells me a song helped them heal, got them through heartbreak, or reminded them to keep the faith, I know I am fulfilling my purpose. I am not just singing, I am sharing my soul so people can find something in it for themselves. That connection is what keeps me going strong after all these years.”
As for what fans can expect next, Hewett says there is always more to come. “I am always working on something new,” he says. “I love giving people the classics they have made part of their lives but I also love adding new chapters to our shared soundtrack.
Decades after he first stepped on stage, Howard Hewett’s voice remains one of R&B’s greatest treasures. His songs continue to uplift, inspire, and remind us all that love, faith, and real connection never go out of style.
For Howard, becoming part of the soundtrack of someone’s life will always be the true measure of success.
