A night to remember at The Book Slam Live
By N.D. Brennan
Atlanta, Georgia, October 15, 2024 – Last night at JB’s Record Lounge, nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s historic West End, The Book Slam Live delivered a night of powerful storytelling, soul-stirring performances, and a celebration of resilience. The event, themed around Domestic Violence Awareness and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, honored survivors, thrivers, and those lost to these battles, while encouraging those still in the midst of their fight. It was an inspiring, heartwarming evening filled with great food, captivating performances, and a vibrant atmosphere.
The show began with a moving performance by Glenda Carswell, author of “A Love Story: The Price I Paid (Vol. 3)”, who shared her powerful and shocking story of losing her toes and the ridicule she endured as a child. Her reading was both heartbreaking and inspiring, as it showcased the strength it takes to overcome adversity and transform hardship into personal growth.
Next, former CFL player Demario Dixontook the stage with an excerpt from his book “Grind and Grow From Within.” His motivational reading filled the room with energy, leaving everyone uplifted and ready to face tomorrow with renewed optimism. Danela Butler followed with her debut book “The Pearl: Unveiling The Strength Within,” offering a powerful reflection on inner strength and self-discovery that resonated deeply with the audience.
A touching highlight of the night occurred when Bernail Fluellen, author of “Expressions From God’s Heart,” met her third cousin, Glenda Carswell, for the first time on stage, both hailing from Perry, Georgia. This unexpected family reunion added a layer of serendipity to an already special evening. Chasmine Iyonna then delivered a riveting reading from her book “Speak To Your Seasons,”sharing her deeply personal story of embracing life’s challenges and looking ahead with hope and confidence.
The final author of the night, Vitelle Webb, delivered a mesmerizing performance from her book “I Am: A Poetic Ensemble.” Her recitation of two deeply honest and dark poems captivated the audience with raw emotion. As a trained actress, Vitelle’s stage presence and delivery were powerful, cementing her performance as one of the most memorable of the evening.
The night was hosted by the multi-talented Dr. April K, star of the one-woman play “Beneath The Crown: A Survivor’s Story.” Dr. April K set the tone for the evening with an excerpt from her acclaimed play, blending powerful spoken word with stunning vocal performances. She closed the show with a soul-stirring rendition of Yolanda Adams’ “Open My Heart,” leaving the audience moved to tears. As the Southeast Regional Domestic Violence Coordinator for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, Dr. April K’s presence and words were a perfect embodiment of the night’s theme of survival, strength, and empowerment.
The evening was made even more special by a surprise honor bestowed upon Javon Johnson, owner of JJP and one-third of the team responsible for bringing The Book Slam Live to select cities. In a surprise presentation by Dr. April K and Dr. Jerome Dorn of Inda House Media, Javon was awarded an honorary doctorate and the prestigious Presidential Achievement Award, signed by President Joe Biden. The recognition honored Javon’s outstanding contributions to the arts and entertainment industry, including his role as one of the stars in Tyler Perry’s hit television series “The Oval.” This moment was a testament to his enduring impact and tireless efforts to uplift and inspire others through his work.
Of course, no event is complete without a feast, and Dr. Gary and Francoise Slaughter of Slaughterhouse Catering delivered just that with their standout menu. The evening’s star dish, chicken and waffles topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream, was a hit with the crowd and perfectly complemented the vibrant energy of the event.
Overall, The Book Slam Live at JB’s Record Lounge was an undeniable triumph—a night of unforgettable stories, stellar musical performances, heartfelt moments, and incredible food. The combination of great authors, a welcoming atmosphere, and an engaged audience created an experience that will live on in the hearts of all who attended.
