On Saturday, January 18th, 2025, the Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park was abuzz with anticipation as The King Center hosted one of its most prestigious events: the MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards. Formerly known as The Salute to Greatness Awards Gala, this marquee celebration marked a highlight of the week-long holiday experience honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy.

A Night of Inspiration and Excellence

The evening, hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner, blended elegance and purpose, uniting leaders, activists, artists, and innovators under one roof. Guests were treated to a celebration of remarkable achievements, powerful speeches, and soul-stirring musical performances by Eric Benét, Jennifer Holliday, and rising star MaKenzie.

Streaming online on January 18th, the awards ceremony reached a global audience, ensuring that the inspiring stories and contributions of the honorees resonated far beyond the walls of the Omni Atlanta Hotel.

Honoring Those Who Exemplify the Beloved Community

The 2025 honorees were a distinguished group of individuals and organizations whose work embodies Dr. King’s vision of a “beloved community.” These leaders demonstrated excellence in fields ranging from social justice to education and technological innovation.

Beloved Community Civic Leadership Award: Black Voters Matter, accepted by co-founders LaTosha Brown and Cliff Albright, recognized their tireless work in empowering marginalized communities.

Beloved Community Technological Innovation Award: PSYONIC, represented by founder and CEO Aadeel Akhtar, was honored for groundbreaking advancements in prosthetics technology.

Christine King Farris Legacy of Service in Education Award: Morris Brown College, under the leadership of Dr. Kevin E. James, was celebrated for its enduring commitment to education.

Yolanda D. King Higher Ground Award: Beloved actress and activist Jenifer Lewis received this prestigious honor for her advocacy and artistic contributions.

Youth Influencer Awards: Student scientist Heman Bekele and the Latino American Association were recognized for their impact on youth empowerment.

Environmental Justice Award: Serenbe, accepted by founder Steve Nygren, was celebrated for its dedication to sustainable living and environmental stewardship.

Coretta Scott King Soul of the Nation Award: Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad was recognized for her tireless work supporting survivors of violence and human trafficking through Nadia’s Initiative.

Corporate Social Impact Award: Mars, Inc., represented by Anton Vincent, was honored for its leadership in corporate responsibility and sustainability.

Social Justice Award: AIDS Healthcare Foundation, led by Michael Weinstein, was acknowledged for its advocacy and global health initiatives.

Salute to Greatness Humanitarian Award: Laura Arnold, co-chair of Arnold Ventures, received the evening’s top honor for her philanthropic efforts to address systemic inequities.

An Unforgettable Evening

As attendees reflected on the inspiring stories of the honorees, the evening reinforced the enduring relevance of Dr. King’s vision. “Tonight, we not only celebrate excellence but also recommit ourselves to the values of equality, peace, and justice,” remarked Dr. Bernice A. King, CEO of The King Center, during her address.

From the heartfelt acceptance speeches to the electrifying musical performances, the 2025 MLK, Jr. Beloved Community Awards stood as a testament to the power of leadership, innovation, and activism. It was a night to honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future—one step closer to realizing the dream of a beloved community.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
