What inspired you to write it?Michael Finkley: “The inspiration came from Proverbs 17:22, ‘A cheerful heart is good medicine.’ That verse spoke deeply to me during a time when I had to intentionally choose joy. Life was happening, but I realized that no matter what’s going on around me, I can still smile because of who God is. That smile isn’t fake, it’s faith.”Q: The song has such a comforting and uplifting tone. What do you hope listeners take away from it?Michael Finkley: “I hope listeners understand that joy is a powerful form of healing. Smiling doesn’t mean life is perfect, it means you’re choosing to see God’s goodness through it all. I want this song to be a reminder that there’s always a reason to smile, even when things seem uncertain.”Q: How does “Smile” reflect your current season in life and music?Michael Finkley: “It’s very reflective of where I am spiritually and creatively. I’m in a season of transparency, my music comes from real experiences, real faith, and real emotions. ‘Smile’ represents growth and gratitude. It’s me saying, ‘I’ve been through some storms, but I’m still standing, and I’m smiling through it.’”Q: You mentioned that this is just the beginning of a new project. What can fans expect from your upcoming album?Michael Finkley: “This upcoming album is one of the most personal things I’ve ever created. It’s filled with songs about hope, healing, worship, and the love of God. Each track tells a story, it’s my testimony, my worship, and my offering to those who need a reminder that joy and peace are still possible.”Q: You’ve become known not only for your music but also as a media personality and inspirational speaker. How do those worlds connect for you?Michael Finkley: “They’re all connected through purpose. Whether it’s on The Michael Finkley Show, on stage, or behind a microphone, my goal is the same, to uplift, to inspire, and to encourage. Every platform is a ministry to me. It’s about using my voice to make a positive impact wherever I can.”Q: What’s next for you in 2025?Michael Finkley: “I’m focused on finishing the album and taking ‘Smile’ on the road to connect with audiences through worship and live events. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone.
