ANN NESBY STOPS BY FOX 5 ATLANTA’S THEE POETIA SHOW TO DISCUSS NEW SINGLE “AMEN” AND ROLE IN TYLER PERRY’S THE GOSPEL OF CHRISTMAS

Celebrated vocalist and actress Ann Nesby, a six-time Grammy Award-nominated solo artist who earned two Grammy Awards during her tenure as a lead vocalist with Sounds of Blackness, recently stopped by FOX 5 Atlanta’s The Portia Show for a conversation with host Portia Brunerabout her new gospel single, “Amen,” and her role in Tyler Perry’s upcoming holiday film, The Gospel of Christmas.

Nesby’s appearance comes during an exciting chapter in a career that has seamlessly crossed gospel, R&B, film, television and inspirational storytelling.

During the interview, Nesby discussed “Amen,” an uplifting anthem rooted in faith, perseverance and the power of maintaining hope through life’s challenges. 

Released in August 2026 and available on all major digital streaming platforms, the song reflects the spiritual foundation that has remained at the heart of Nesby’s artistry throughout her career.

“There are moments when life can make you feel like giving up, but that’s exactly when you have to lean into your faith,” says Nesby. 

“‘Amen’ is a reminder that God is always with us, even in our darkest moments. No matter what you’re going through, don’t quit, don’t lose hope and never stop believing. Sometimes all you need to do is lift your hands, trust God and simply say, ‘Amen.’”

Nesby also discussed her upcoming role in Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas, joining an ensemble of celebrated gospel and R&B artists that includes Fantasia Barrino, Durrell “Tank” Babbs, Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond, The Clark Sisters, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Smokie Norful, Hezekiah Walker, JeKalyn Carr and Antwinette McCloud.

The project represents a meaningful full-circle moment for Nesby and Perry. Long before Perry became one of the most influential forces in film, television and theater, Nesby appeared in his early stage production I Know I’ve Been Changed. 

Nearly three decades later, the two reunite creatively with Nesby appearing in Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas, connecting an important chapter from the beginning of their respective journeys with where their careers are today.

Written, directed and produced by Tyler Perry, The Gospel of Christmas adds another chapter to Nesby’s work as an actress and entertainer, building upon a screen and stage career that has allowed her to bring the same emotional depth and authenticity found in her music to dramatic performances.

Nesby’s foundation in gospel music stretches back to her early involvement with the Gospel Music Workshop of America, founded by Rev. James Cleveland, where she was exposed to some of gospel music’s most influential voices and traditions. 

Those formative experiences helped shape the distinctive vocal style and faith-centered artistry that would eventually introduce her to audiences around the world.

She later rose to international prominence as a lead vocalist with Sounds of Blackness, becoming one of the signature voices associated with the ensemble’s groundbreaking blend of gospel, soul, R&B and inspirational music.

During Nesby’s tenure as a lead vocalist, Sounds of Blackness earned two Grammy Awards, with Nesby serving as a lead vocalist on the Grammy-winning projects. 

She subsequently launched a successful solo career that has earned her six Grammy Award nominations and produced enduring recordings including “I Apologize” and “Put It on Paper,” her celebrated duet with Rev. Al Green.

Throughout her career, Nesby has collaborated with an extraordinary range of acclaimed artists and producers, including Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight and Sting, further establishing her as one of the distinctive voices bridging contemporary gospel, soul and R&B.

Her talents have also extended to film, television and the stage, with credits including The Fighting Temptations, Queen Sugar and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.

In The Fighting Temptations, Nesby portrayed Aunt Sally Walker and shared a memorable musical performance with gospel legend Shirley Caesar.

Nesby has expanded her creative work behind the camera as well, serving as executive producer and narrator of the documentary CIRILO, A Legacy Untold, chronicling the life and impact of civil rights leader Cirilo McSween.

The film completed an Oscar-qualifying theatrical run at Atlanta’s historic Tara Theatre in February 2025.

With new music, an expanding body of work in film and television, and a career that continues to reach audiences across generations, Nesby remains committed to using her voice to inspire, encourage and uplift.
