NIA Cultural Center Set to Ignite Juneteenth in Galveston with Star-Studded Gospel Celebration

This Juneteenth, the NIA Cultural Center, a cornerstone of African American culture and heritage, is bringing the community together for its 5th Annual Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the historic 1894 Grand Opera House in Galveston will come alive from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM with an unforgettable showcase of gospel music, honoring freedom, faith, and the enduring legacy of Black culture.

For decades, the NIA Cultural Center has been at the heart of Galveston’s efforts to preserve, celebrate, and promote African American heritage.

The Center’s events connect the community through art, music, and education, while inspiring future generations to embrace cultural pride and empowerment.

The Emancipation Gospel Celebration exemplifies this mission, combining world-class music with a celebration of history and community.

This year’s lineup is nothing short of spectacular. Four-time GRAMMY® winner Karen Clark Sheard, legendary member of the Clark Sisters, will headline, bringing her extraordinary multi-octave vocals that have influenced artists across genres.

Award-winning gospel artist Byron Cage, affectionately known as the “Prince of Praise,” will also take the stage, sharing the contemporary worship songs that have made him a household name.

Opening the concert will be The Brown Four, a talented sibling group from Memphis, Tennessee, whose passion for music began at home, in church, and on local playgrounds.

Beyond the music, the celebration honors community leaders with the “Champions of Freedom Award”, recognizing individuals whose contributions continue to uplift Galveston and beyond. Sue Johnson, Executive Director of the NIA Cultural Center, shared, “Juneteenth is a time to honor our history, culture, and freedom.

Bringing together these incredible gospel artists allows us to celebrate those who continue to champion empowerment and positive change in our community.”

Alex Thomas, spokesperson for the NIA Cultural Center, added, “This event demonstrates the power of music and culture to unite, inspire, and uplift.

Hosting gospel legends in Galveston emphasizes the Center’s ongoing commitment to preserving heritage and creating experiences that strengthen the community.”

Tickets for this landmark Juneteenth celebration start at $35, with proceeds supporting the NIA Cultural Center’s mission to empower the community through art, culture, education, and engagement.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
