History in the Making: Claressa “T-Rex” Shields Returns to Middleweight for Historic Atlanta Showdown Against Kaye Scott
By Dr. Jerome Dorn
The road to boxing history officially began Tuesday inside State Farm Arena as Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Claressa “T-Rex” Shields and Unified WBC & WBA Middleweight Champion Kaye Scott came face-to-face for the first time ahead of their highly anticipated world championship clash on Saturday, August 15, streaming live on DAZN from Atlanta’s State Farm Arena.
Presented by Salita Promotions in partnership with Wynn Records, Claressa Shields Promotions, Route 30 Promotions, and presenting sponsor Zeus Network, the event marks a groundbreaking milestone as the first major women’s boxing event to headline State Farm Arena.
The evening promises to be more than just championship boxing. It represents a celebration of sports, entertainment, and culture. Earlier in the day it was announced that Zeus Network will stream the live undercard beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET, featuring a combination of professional bouts and celebrity influencer matchups. Joining the press conference were entertainment personalities Ray J, Orlando Brown, Big Lex, Not Da Lil One, and Tesehki, highlighting the crossover appeal of this landmark event.
Shields Chases More History
Already recognized as one of the greatest female fighters in boxing history, Claressa Shields will make her long-awaited Atlanta debut while returning to the middleweight division in pursuit of another unprecedented achievement.
If victorious, Shields would become only the second heavyweight champion—male or female—in more than 120 years to capture a world championship after moving down in weight.
Speaking confidently at the press conference, Shields expressed respect for her opponent while making it clear she intends to reclaim the middleweight throne.
“I want to thank Kaye for taking this fight, but because of you I have to lose 20 pounds,” Shields said. “If you hadn’t taken this fight I wouldn’t have come back down to middleweight. I vacated those belts because no one wanted to fight me.”
The two-time Olympic gold medalist dismissed concerns about returning to 160 pounds, insisting that the weight cut will not diminish her legendary skill set.
“I can make weight comfortably and keep all my power. Over the years I’ve gotten stronger.”
Shields praised Scott’s toughness, referencing the championship battle that earned Scott recognition in what many considered one of the year’s most exciting fights.
“She’s not an easy task. I saw her fight for these belts. It was a dogfight. They were bloody and bruised by the end, but Kaye came out on top.”
While acknowledging Scott’s strength, Shields remains convinced that experience and ring IQ will ultimately prevail.
“Skill overrides everything. I could be tired and have skill. I could be weak and have skill. People think it’s all about strength. I just know how to win.”
Shields also thanked longtime promoter Dmitriy Salita, DAZN, Wynn Records, Zeus Network, and her fans while expressing excitement about finally bringing her championship talents to Atlanta.
Scott Ready to Defend Her Crown
While much of the attention centered on Shields’ return, Unified Middleweight Champion Kaye Scott welcomed the opportunity to prove she belongs among boxing’s elite.
“This is a big opportunity and I am honored to be part of it,” Scott said. “They’re my belts and I am the world champion right now. She’s the challenger. I’m not looking to hand them over. She’s going to have to come get them off me.”
Scott emphasized her extensive amateur background of more than 120 amateur bouts, nearly two decades dedicated to boxing, and the confidence that has carried her to the top of the middleweight division.
She also believes Shields’ weight cut could become a deciding factor late in the contest.
“The aspect of her dropping the weight is definitely my advantage. I sit comfortably at middleweight. I’m hoping in the later stages of the fight my endurance will come through.”
Scott closed by thanking her manager Mark Taffet, Salita Promotions, Wynn Records, and Shields for selecting her for this historic championship opportunity.
Promoters Promise a Landmark Event
Salita Promotions President Dmitriy Salita described the evening as a groundbreaking collaboration between championship boxing, entertainment, and culture.
“We are bridging together boxing and music. Thank you to Ruben, Papoose, Wynn Records, Zeus Network and DAZN for helping make this happen.”
Salita praised Shields as one of the most decorated athletes in the sport while calling Scott a worthy world champion fresh off earning WBC Fight of the Year honors.
“This is going to be an incredible fight.”
Sports, Entertainment and Culture Unite
Ruben Branson, CEO of Wynn Records, emphasized the company’s vision of merging sports with entertainment.
“Wynn Records’ goal is to blend sports, entertainment and culture. August 15 will be an epic night for Claressa Shields, who continues to redefine history.”
As a United States military veteran, Branson also recognized Shields’ accomplishments representing America as a two-time Olympic gold medalist.
Zeus Network CEO Lemuel Plummer called the partnership another step toward transforming boxing entertainment.
“We are excited to distribute the undercard on Zeus Network. This partnership will change the sport of boxing entertainment.”
Atlanta Makes Boxing History
Route 30 Promotions’ Miriam Archibong reminded everyone in attendance that the significance of the evening extends far beyond championship belts.
“August 15 isn’t just another fight. For the first time in Atlanta’s history, State Farm Arena will host a major boxing event headlined by two women.”
She concluded with a statement that perfectly captured the significance of the occasion.
“Great cities don’t wait for history—they create it.”
Final Bell
When the opening bell rings on August 15, more than championship belts will be at stake. Legacy, history, and the continued evolution of women’s boxing will share center stage as two elite champions meet in one of the year’s most anticipated title fights.
For Claressa Shields, it is another opportunity to add to one of boxing’s greatest résumés.
For Kaye Scott, it is the chance to defend her crown against one of the sport’s biggest names.
For Atlanta, it is history in the making.
