Undauntable Melba Moore: A World Class Human Rights Expression

Ms. Melba Moore to Receive “Woman of Life” World Human Rights Award in Atlanta

At the radiant cusp of her 80th birthday, the legendary Melba Moore continues to stand tall as one of the most undauntable voices in entertainment and human rights. With a career defined by resilience, artistry, and authenticity, Moore will be honored with the inaugural “Woman of Life” World Human Rights Award on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in Atlanta.

Presented by the World Human Rights Network, the award ceremony will recognize Moore’s lifetime of contributions—not only to music and stage but to the very essence of humanity. The event will take place at Yuji Modern Japanese Restaurant along the Atlanta Beltline (667 Auburn Ave., NE, Ste. 122, Atlanta, GA 30312) beginning at 6 p.m.

The Healing Essence of Melba Moore

World Human Rights Network Chairman Al Bartell describes Moore’s spirit as “a healing communication of peace.”

“Dare we,” Bartell reflects, “acknowledge the right to be a woman by establishing a world human rights ‘Woman of Life’ award? No matter what adversity she has faced, Ms. Melba Moore has faced it as a woman—expressed in the vulnerability and undauntable strength of her womanhood. She has given of her life, giving life to others. We see her ‘Woman of Life’ essence as a world-class human rights expression.”

Bartell further emphasized that Moore’s artistry embodies a 21st-century commitment to dismantling the framework of violence through peace, communication, and relationship-building. Her music, he states, continues to stand as a courageous act of healing for global humanity.

A Voice That Cannot Be Silenced

Melba Moore’s story is one of triumph. She first captured Broadway audiences in 1969’s groundbreaking hit Hair, stepping into the spotlight without an audition—her powerhouse voice and unshakable presence simply undeniable. She later became the show’s first African American female lead, breaking barriers and opening doors for future generations.

Though Moore faced tragedy—including financial devastation at the hands of mismanagement—her resilience never wavered. Time and again, she has returned stronger, using her voice not only to sing but to uplift.

Today, her live performances still leave audiences breathless. From Broadway classics to her signature American songbook renditions, Moore’s soaring vocals remain as inspiring as ever—testament to her enduring artistry and faith.

Celebrating a Woman of Life

“Visible personal milestones advance human rights recognition,” Bartell affirms. “If we reflect over the span of human history, achievements have often occurred from courageous thought and action—often out of the enduring efforts of an inspiring human being. May this event renew us in our self-belief, and in our collective power to create and inspire human rights in America.”

With her artistry, compassion, and determination, Melba Moore represents that exact spirit—a living testimony to resilience, dignity, and hope. The “Woman of Life” Award honors not just her career, but the way she has chosen to live it: boldly, fearlessly, and in service to others.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
