Cafe Mocha Radio’s 15th Anniversary Salute THEM Awards

Celebrating 15 Years of Empowerment, Culture, and Community at the Historic Howard Theatre

On November 6, the red carpet will roll out at the Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C., as Cafe Mocha Radio—the groundbreaking radio show “from a woman’s perspective”—celebrates its 15th Anniversary Salute THEM Awards. This milestone Crystal Anniversary honors the cultural architects, trailblazers, and icons who have shaped industries, inspired communities, and uplifted generations.

The event, presented in conjunction with the HBCU First LOOK Film Festival, will officially kick off the festival’s celebration of Black excellence in media, film, and culture.

A Legacy of Voices, Vision, and Victory

Since its launch, Cafe Mocha Radio has redefined talk radio for women of color. Co-hosted by Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker, pop culture correspondent Jawn Murray, and Lalah Mohammed, the show reaches millions each week on SiriusXM and WHUR-FM (Washington, D.C.), with affiliates across major markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, and Nashville.

This year’s Salute THEM Awards will not only celebrate 15 years of empowering storytelling but also honor individuals whose contributions continue to transform culture and community.

A Star-Studded Celebration of Excellence

The 2025 Salute THEM Awards will honor a distinguished lineup of industry icons and innovators:

More Than an Award Show

Beyond the glitz, the Salute THEM Awards carries a mission rooted in impact. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Mocha Cares Foundation, which provides support for women and children affected by domestic violence and funds mentorship initiatives for HBCU students—a continuation of Cafe Mocha’s enduring commitment to empowerment and education.

Past honorees have included legends like Iyanla Vanzant, Doug E. Fresh, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Earth, Wind & Fire, Wanda Durant, and Lamman Rucker, underscoring the event’s legacy as one of recognition and reverence for changemakers who lead with heart.

A Celebration 15 Years in the Making

As Cafe Mocha Radio toasts to 15 years of inspiration, this year’s Salute THEM Awards stands as both a reflection and a promise—a reflection of the powerful voices that have shaped our culture, and a promise to continue amplifying those yet to be heard.

Under the bright lights of the Howard Theatre, one message will echo through every speech, performance, and tribute:

When women lead with purpose, communities rise with power.

Celebrity photographer and disabled Vietnam veteran Jerome Dorn embodies the very definition of resilience. Born in Philadelphia, the fifth of seven children, Dorn stayed focused throughout his youth, eventually obtaining his degree in Criminal Justice. Dorn has worked with the Philadelphia Police Department, Department of Justice, World Wide Detective Agency, and several other high profile security groups. Throughout his successful career, Dorn wrestled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, an aftereffect of his military service. Battling the pain and debilitating effect of PTSD, Dorn found comfort behind the camera. Photography proved to be not only therapeutic, but life changing as well. Dorn picked up his first camera in 1970 while serving in Vietnam and knew instantly that behind the lens was where he belonged. His shooting style and photographs were special, generating a buzz in the industry. In 1985, he began his career in photojournalism, working in a variety of genres. Dorn’s credentials include fashion, lifestyle photography, photojournalism, and celebrity/red carpet coverage. Working with MSNBC, Jet Magazine, and major publications in Philadelphia and around the country, Dorn has had the honor of capturing the images of hundreds of notable celebrities and politicians including President Barack Obama, George Bush Jr, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson, Rihanna, Snoop Dog, Will Smith, and Tyler Perry. Photography has sent Dorn around the globe, inspiring his passion for civil activism. In 1995, Dorn assembled and led a group of forty-two men to the Million Man March. Together, they spent five days walking from Philadelphia to Washington DC. In his travels, Dorn observed a common theme amongst the youth of the world. Many of the children he encountered seemed lost. Understanding that opportunities for at-risk youth are minimal, Dorn was inspired to make a difference. Established by Dorn in 2011, InDaHouseMedia was built on the idea that there is room in the house for everyone. With InDaHouseMedia, Dorn’s mission is to provide the future generation with positive direction through sports, music, and photography.
