ROGERHILL MUSIC: “When It’s Time, It’s Time!”

By Dr. Jerome Dorn

“He waited on God’s timing and now the world is ready “

Rochester, New York — affectionately known as both The Flower City and The Flour City — has long been a place where things bloom and rise. It’s no coincidence that this vibrant city is also the birthplace of one of R&B’s most authentic new voices, Roger Hill, known to the world as ROGERHILL MUSIC. Like the rich soil of his hometown, Hill’s journey has been one of deep roots, steady growth, and a late but powerful blossom.

Now based in Atlanta, Hill has found his rhythm — and his purpose. His story is one of rediscovery, divine timing, and soulful truth. “A lot of people ask me, ‘Why now?’” Hill says. “I guess when God says it’s time to do something, you just do it. Then again, I might not have been ready back then. But when it’s time, it’s time.”

A Voice Born in the Church

Hill’s relationship with music began at age five, singing alongside his sister under the management of their mother. The two performed in churches across Rochester, harmonizing their way into hearts every Sunday. Yet young Roger wasn’t in love with the spotlight — not yet. “I never really wanted to sing,” he admits. “I just wanted to be a kid.”

Life led him on many paths — college football, construction, entrepreneurship — but music was always quietly present. It resurfaced when Hill owned a nightclub in Rochester and booked national acts like Angela Winbush, Rick James’ Stone City Band, and Calvin Richardson. One night, nerves and a bottle of Dom Pérignon pushed him onstage to sing Heatwave’s Always and Forever. The crowd’s reaction sparked something. The seed was planted — but still, it wasn’t time.

A New Beginning in Atlanta

In 2011, Hill made a bold move to Atlanta — a city known for birthing new musical dreams. Thursday nights at Kat’s Café became his training ground. Performing classics by Donny Hathaway, Jodeci, and The Isley Brothers, he found his voice again. One day, while driving, Hill heard The Isley Brothers’ Footsteps in the Dark on the radio. The song struck a chord deep within him — and soon after, fate introduced him to a producer who encouraged him to write. That’s when Come Back To Me was born.

The song, produced by Rick Marcel — the renowned guitarist for Ron Isley and Kool & The Gang — became Hill’s first Top 30 R&B hit in 2023. But for Hill, it was more than a chart success. It was a spiritual awakening.

Healing Through Music

After surviving COVID-19 at the onset of the 2020 pandemic, Hill realized that life had given him another chance. “God presented me with a gift, and it was time to use it,” he says. That moment of clarity birthed a new chapter — and a renewed sense of purpose.

Now, as he readies his debut album, Hill’s songwriting reflects his journey — honest, soulful, and steeped in lived experience. His forthcoming single, “Nobody Knows,” produced by Grammy Award-winner Steven Russell of R&B supergroup Troop, is a deeply emotional confession about love, vulnerability, and timing.

“On one level, it’s a man saying ‘nobody knows how much I love you,’” Hill explains. “But on another level, it’s about realizing she’s not ready for the love you have to give — and nobody knows that pain but you.”

The Soul of a Storyteller

From the breezy romance of I Will Love You to the heartfelt closure of Your Heart My Heart, Hill’s music paints vivid portraits of grown-up love — honest, imperfect, and real. His sound blends classic R&B storytelling with modern soul sensibility. Think Ron Isley meets Mary J. Blige — an artist unafraid to live out his truth through his music.

“I’ve been through too much to play games,” he laughs. “Now, my music is about love, peace, and emotional honesty.”

Full Circle Moments

ROGERHILL MUSIC’s journey has led him to stages alongside the likes of Babyface, Jon B., Lyfe Jennings, and Leela James. He’s performed for the National Black Radio Hall of Fame, received encouragement from Dr. Bobby Jones, and even shared his gift in front of his idol — Ron Isley himself.

Every experience feels like divine timing. “Maybe my destiny was to be that young gospel singer who had to live long enough to become an old soul man,” he reflects.

The New Era: “Nobody Knows”

With Nobody Knows, ROGERHILL MUSIC stands ready to take his place among today’s great R&B storytellers. The single’s lush instrumentation, silky vocals, and lyrical depth prove that real soul music still has a home. It’s not about chasing trends — it’s about telling truths.

“When people hear my music,” Hill says, “I want them to feel something — to know that love still matters, that vulnerability is strength, and that timing is everything.”

And just like that — the boy who once didn’t want to sing now can’t stop. Because when it’s time, it’s time.
